If you’re able to make money from your passion, you’ve pretty much won at life. Most of us aren’t lucky enough to get paid to do something we enjoy, but doing so can be incredibly beneficial for your happiness and well-being.
Obviously, there are obstacles. Otherwise everyone would be doing it, and the world would be devoid of system administrators. But the obstacles can be surmountable, which is why I’m here. Check out this list to see where you might be going wrong.
1) Lack of Commitment
You probably already know that making a living as an entrepreneur is much more challenging than being in employment. As an employee, you’re still getting paid while surfing the internet, getting a cup of coffee, or using the restroom. If you’re a one-person show, you probably won’t.
My Tip: You’re going to have to put in a lot of work to make a living from your passion. Luckily for you, it won’t feel like work if you enjoy doing it. Reconcile yourself with the long days ahead and be patient, because no one becomes successful overnight.
2) Right Field, Wrong Career
Suppose you love fishing. Just because you love it, doesn’t mean you want to do it competitively. Perhaps you’re more suited to teaching fishing, or designing fishing lures, for example. People who love kids don’t necessarily want to own a daycare centre.
Remember: There are multiple ways to make money within any field
3) Lack of Focus on Value Creation
The simple truth is this: you have to provide a valuable service or product to someone if you want to make money. It doesn’t matter how much you love doing it, if it’s useless to everyone but you, you’re in for a hard time.
4) Self-Sabotage
A lot of people are embarrassed about the idea of taking money off of someone in return for a service or product they enjoy creating. Remember that if someone is willing to pay for it, you deserve to earn it. You’re providing something of value to someone else, be proud if they’re willing to part with their cash for it.
5) Getting Advice From the Wrong People
Your high school friend might be a VP at a pharmaceutical company, but that doesn’t mean he has a clue about selling clothes online. Just because someone is successful in a particular field doesn’t mean they have a clue about your business or career.
My Tip: If you’re starting an online clothing store, seek advice from those who have succeeded in running a similar business.
Let’s be clear. Earning money from something that brings you joy is a challenging but absolutely worthy pursuit. Nothing is more satisfying than generating income from something that doesn’t really feel like a chore. You’ll encounter bumps in the road, but don’t give up. I believe in you!
